Vapi is a city in Western India, about 1,000 mi away from Sukinda. The city is split in half by National Highway 8. The western part of the city was the original location, and the eastern part is mainly composed of industry and newer residential areas. Mumbai is just over 100 miles south, and Surat is about 75 miles north. There is access to the Arabian Sea through the delta of the Daman Ganga River, which is about 4 miles west. The city has tropical weather and experiences just three seasons: winter, summer and monsoon, with rainfall ranging from 100-120 inches per year. There are 4 rivers that flow through Vapi: the Dhobikhadi, the Bhilkhadi, the Kolak and the Damanganga rivers.
There are many places in Vapi to visit. The Ganga River Banks is one of the charming attractions of the city and is constantly crowded with tourists. Besides the two states of Maharashtra and Gujarat, the river also flows through the two Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. The Daman Ganga River flows through the two Indian states of Maharashtra and Gujarat and then finally flows into the Arabian Sea. Next, tourists can visit Daman Beach, which is a perfect place to admire the beauty of nature and to enjoy a stress free time with family. Other important attractions like the J.T and Princess Park are also located near Vapi. Finally, tourist can visit The Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation(G.I.D.C) Garden. This park is covered with plenty of trees and open lawns. The garden offers a nice environment and beautiful view of the surroundings. The Garden is not only a perfect picnic spot, but also a perfect leisure spot for people of all ages. The location is great for photographers and nature lovers. The park is not only for locals who want to take a break from the stressful city life, but also tourists who want some peace and quiet with nature all while being within the city itself. The best time for people to visit the park are in the months of October and March.
Chemical industries such as Arti and Supreet Chemicals, and textile industries such as Alok industries Are quite common in Vapi. Today, about 70% of the total industries in the town are chemical plants, mainly used for chemical distillation and producing pesticides and dyes. Other major industries include paper, packaging, pharmaceuticals, etc. Another organization Vapi has is the Common Effluent Treatment Plant (or CETP). This is the largest in Asia and one of India's biggest pollution treatment plants in terms of capacity, treating the pollutants from these industries before it’s released into the river. The CETP is run by Vapi Waste and Effluent Management Company, and is promoted by the Vapi Industries Association.
Most Wimbledon tennis players use specially designed towels which are made in Vapi. The towels are made by Welspun India factory located in Vapi. Recently the Rugby World Cup 2015 towels were also supplied by this company .SunPharma, which is one of the largest pharmacy companies in the world was founded in Vapi in1983. Vapi has 13 colleges, and 33 primary schools. Navratri, which means Nine Nights, is a holiday dedicated to the worship of the goddess Durga. It occurs twice every year in Vapi. During the nine days of the festival, nine different forms of the goddess are worshipped, and people participate in the cultural dance called Garbha/Dandiya.
Although Vapi has been extremely polluted for several years, as of August 2009, it was removed from the list of the most polluted cities. It’s great to see that changes have been made and that the city is getting better. More recent information about the pollution levels has been provided by government authorities, and pollution levels in air and water have dropped significantly compared to earlier stats. Several investments have been made, both in pollution control, and in common treatment plants. Air pollution in and around Vapi is now within government standards for the most part.
The groundwater in surrounding areas has also been tested, and it shows great improvement. Drinking water in the town and surrounding villages is clean, according to reliable test data. There are no significant health problems regarding drinking water. Significant effort has gone into stopping illegal dumping. Dumps outside of the city still exist, and are being dealt with properly. The roads and footpaths have been improved greatly. All open gutters are covered, and drainage from plant to the CETP is well established. The CETP continues to be upgraded and improve, and new investments are being tested and they should bring all tests to within government standards pretty soon. Heavy metals are well managed. The Industries Association has built a Center of Excellence to improve the quality of products, testing of the materials, and advising VIA members on reducing effluents and pollution.
